Philips Head

By teresa difeo at 2012-10-13 00:21:02
The x-shaped, star-headed or cross-design screw tops and the screw-drivers used to work on them are named after an American business man called Henry Phillips who invented the x-headed screws. This design is very useful in guiding the screw correctly, providing ease of turn and tightening and they're also self-centering and provide very good grip especially in places that are difficult to reach. These screws are extensively used in the automobile industry and wherever automated processes are used. They are used in conjunction with special Phillips head screwdrivers which have a pointed tip making centering easy. This is a great advantage in assembly-line situations, where quick, simple and efficient processes are required.

Phillips head screws are available in a variety of materials like metals, nylon, plastics and alloys, in a variety of colors and textures, gauges, thicknesses and types of thread. They can also be counter-sunk or flange types. When they're manufactured in plastics, the advantage is that they're lightweight and corrosion/rust resistant.

Binder: these threaded screws are ideal for fastening and joining surfaces especially in an outdoors environment, since they're usually made of high-grade nylon or plastic. This material makes the screws highly corrosion and rust resistant. They can also withstand a wide range of temperatures.

Round-head: Phillips head screws have a dome-shaped head with an indented cross and these are ideal for smaller, lightweight applications like picture hanging or joining light materials like plywood or thin sheet metals. This design is being gradually phased out as it doesn't find much application in modern design.

Fillister: The fillister-head screw has an oval-shaped top and is smaller in diameter than the usual round-head screws. This makes it suitable for applications which are closer to flanges or edges and raised surfaces. The small diameter helps to increase torque and they can also be counter-sunk.

Pan-head: This design is increasingly replacing the round-head Phillips screws and has a large diameter with a slightly raised outer perimeter, making it suitable for high-torque tightening.

Binding head: This variety is most commonly used in electrical/radio/television work because the space beneath the head allows wires to be secured under it, eliminating loose and frayed ends.

Stove/Oven head: is the Phillips head screw which is best suited in assembly line applications as it has a large, low top and diameter. It is excellent for use in sheet-metal, when the size of the hole may be slightly larger, and can be covered with the head.

Based on the function, your need and requirements, you can choose the appropriate Phillips head screws and screwdrivers and purchase them from your local hardware store, or order them on-line from the manufacturers. Most of them have on-line catalogs and may offer free samples, discounts on bulk orders or free shipping.
