Access Hardware

By teresa difeo at 2012-10-13 00:15:12
Whether it's a single door or window that you want to secure or a whole system of controls that provide safety and security to your building, choosing and installing the correct access hardware is of prime importance.

Access hardware consists of latches, locks, handles, bolts, dead-bolts, hinges, stays, stoppers, keys, knobs, levers, escutcheons, gravity hinges, indicator bolts, etc. and all these should be chosen for their functionality, effectiveness, resistance to damage and also the aesthetics. Some of them could be vital components in a fire-resistance set-up, or they could provide ease of entry and exit to spaces like toilets, shower cubicles and kiosks. An important feature to keep in mind is that the access hardware should seamlessly integrate into an access system so it is important to design it along with the latches, hinges, knobs etc and not have to try and fit them into the design later. This ensures the smooth working of entry and exit systems. The size, material, grip-size and utility factors should be assessed for each type of access hardware before it is chosen to be part of the door or window design. In certain applications, compression gaskets may be required to protect against dust, moisture and other contaminants. You may also require stronger levers to manage “sticky door” syndrome.

Latches: are mechanical fitments that provide grip for doors, windows, drawers, cabinets, cupboards etc. Usually, latches are not self-locking devices unless they combine this function also. Cam latches can be attached to the back of the door-lock and rotated to block the movement of the door. Compression latches catch the door to the frame and compress it against the frame, whereas deadbolts fasten the door to the frame through a bolt. Slam latches are used to shut doors through force while rotary latches hook into a corresponding part on the frame. Key locks can be attached to latches and a variety of enabling devices like handles, pulls, knobs, levers or rings are used to manipulate the door or window. Push-buttons and triggers, spring-loaded and recessed latches are other available options.

Hinges/corner hinges: These allow the door, window or other shutting part to be moved towards or away from the access point frame. There are hundreds of varieties of hinges but the basic design involves a central part with two leaves which have to be fitted to the frame and the movable door by screws. Recessed or concealed hinges provide greater security and they should be made of corrosion and rust-resistant materials.

Turn Accessories: include fixing devices, spacers, spacers, dust-caps, lock handles etc. and they could be made of zinc, stainless steel or a variety of plastic compounds.

Gaskets: Made of flexible yet hard-wearing rubber or plastics, they're used in industrial applications and they need to provide a good grip especially if they're attached to compression latches. They should also be corrosion-resistant, be able to repel the action of aggressive chemicals, acids, gases and solvents.
